IWFM qualifications FAQs

Everything you need to know about IWFM qualifications and studying with Learnmore.

IWFM qualifications are professional qualifications in workplace and facilities management, accredited by the Institute of Workplace and Facilities Management. They’re fully regulated, internationally recognised, and considered the gold standard in FM qualifications. Completing one demonstrates your commitment to professional standards and can help you progress in your career.

No, there’s no legal requirement. Many people build successful FM careers without formal qualifications. But an IWFM qualification can give you a competitive edge when applying for roles or promotions, and it’s particularly valuable if you’ve built your knowledge on the job but don’t have paperwork to show for it.

Yes. IWFM qualifications are recognised globally by the profession. They provide a world-leading framework for professional development in workplace and facilities management.

They’re the same organisation. The British Institute of Facilities Management (BIFM) became the Institute of Workplace and Facilities Management (IWFM) in 2018. If you have an older BIFM qualification, it’s still valid and recognised.

Choosing the right level

We offer Levels 3, 4, 5, and 6. Each level is designed for a different stage of your FM career.

Level 3 is for first-line managers, supervisors, and those new to FM or looking for a career change. Typical roles include Facilities Coordinator, Team Leader, and Office Manager.

Level 4 is for operational managers responsible for day-to-day FM operations. Typical roles include Facilities Manager, Premises Manager, and Contract Manager.

Level 5 is for senior and specialist facilities managers shaping FM strategy, managing multiple sites, or leading significant change programmes.

Level 6 is for senior FM leaders responsible for long-term strategy, procurement, governance, and risk at an executive level. Typical roles include Head of FM and Facilities Director.

You don’t have to start at Level 3. You can enter at the level that matches your current experience and responsibilities.

The difference is the number of credits you need to complete, which affects how many units you’ll study.

An Award is the smallest commitment, typically around 6 credits and 1 – 2 units.

A Certificate sits in the middle, typically around 12 – 15 credits and 4 units.

A Diploma is the most comprehensive, typically 28 – 32 credits or more and around 8 – 9 units.

Each qualification has mandatory units you must complete, plus optional units you can choose based on your interests and development needs.

No. You can start at whichever level matches your current role and experience. There are no formal entry requirements, though it’s important to choose a level that’s appropriate for your knowledge and responsibilities. If you’re unsure, we can help you decide.

How the qualifications work

All IWFM qualifications are assessed by coursework assignments. There are no exams. Assignments are work-based, so you’ll apply what you’re learning directly to your role. This makes the learning practical and relevant to your day-to-day work.

You have up to two years to complete your qualification from the date of registration. How quickly you finish depends on the size of qualification you choose and how much time you can dedicate to studying.

Most of our learners complete a Certificate in 7 – 9 months and a Diploma in 10 – 12 months.

Yes. Our IWFM qualifications are delivered through remote learning, so you can study from anywhere and fit it around your work commitments. There’s no need to take time off or travel to a classroom.

At Learnmore, you’ll have full support from experienced trainers and facilitators throughout your qualification. You’re not doing this alone.

The assignment format suits most people, but if you find written assessments challenging, alternative forms of assessment may be available. Get in touch with us to discuss your options.

IWFM membership

Yes. When you register for an IWFM qualification, you receive a complimentary studying membership of IWFM for up to two years or until you complete your qualification. This gives you access to events, resources, Good Practice Guides, and a community of FM professionals.

IWFM qualifications are aligned with membership grades, so completing a qualification can help you achieve a professional membership level faster than experience alone.

With a Level 3 qualification and around one year of experience, you can achieve Associate membership (AIWFM). Without a qualification, you’d need two years of experience.

With a Level 4 or 5 qualification and two years of experience, you can achieve Member status (MIWFM). Without a qualification, you’d need five years of experience and at least three years in a management role.

A Level 6 Diploma, combined with at least two years of industry experience and three years in a management role, qualifies you for Certified membership (CIWFM).

Post-nominals are the letters after your name that indicate your IWFM membership grade, such as AIWFM, MIWFM, or CIWFM. They signal your professional standing to employers, clients, and colleagues. You can use them on your CV, email signature, LinkedIn profile, and business cards.

Costs and funding

Costs vary depending on the level and size of qualification you choose. Please check each qualification page to confirm the price of the qualification you are interested in.

You may be eligible for an Advanced Learner Loan if you’re aged 19 or over and studying at Level 3 or above. The loan doesn’t depend on your household income or employment status, and there’s no credit check. You won’t have to pay anything back until you’re earning more than £25,000 per year.

Yes. IWFM is on the UK Government’s list of professional bodies approved for tax relief, so you may be able to claim money back on your membership fees.

Certification and career progression

No. Once you’ve achieved your IWFM qualification, it’s valid for life.

Research from the IWFM shows that qualifications increase the chances of advancing within organisations, and advancement typically comes with better pay. Employers and recruiters increasingly look for IWFM membership grades when assessing candidates for roles.

Yes. Some universities offer advanced entry to degree programmes for those with IWFM qualifications, meaning you may be able to skip the first year of study. If this interests you, check with your chosen university for their specific entry requirements.
