Somewhere in your organisation right now, someone is asking for AI training. Maybe it is a team lead who has seen a competitor announce something. Maybe it is a board member who wants to know “what we are doing about AI”. The request sounds urgent. What is far less clear is whether it is a genuine skills gap or a fear driven purchase that will land flat.
The pressure is real, and the numbers explain why. Self reported AI use among UK businesses has risen from around 12% to around 35% since late 2023 (ONS, Artificial intelligence in UK businesses, 2026). But the same research shows adoption has been shallow, with the average number of AI technologies used per adopting business rising only modestly, from around 1.4 to around 1.6 over the same period (ONS, Artificial intelligence in UK businesses, 2026). In other words, plenty of organisations have bought a licence. Far fewer have built a habit.
The prize is time, not headcount
The strongest UK evidence so far is not about replacing people. It is about giving them their time back. When the government trialled Microsoft 365 Copilot with 20,000 civil servants, participants saved an average of 26 minutes a day, close to two weeks per person per year, with over 70% reporting less time spent hunting for information or doing routine tasks (Government Digital Service, Microsoft 365 Copilot Experiment Cross-Government Findings Report, 2025).
And the fear that AI adoption means job cuts is not showing up in the data. In late December 2025, only 4% of UK businesses currently using AI reported that their workforce headcount had decreased as a result (ONS, Business insights and impact on the UK economy, January 2026). Among SMEs the picture is the same, with 95% of those using AI reporting no impact on workforce size over the past year and 86% saying job roles have remained unchanged (British Chambers of Commerce and University of Essex, Future of Work AI in the Workplace report, March 2026).
The organisations getting value from AI are using it to free people from routine admin so they can do the things people are actually needed for. Judgement, relationships, decisions, service. The question is not whether AI could help your organisation. It is whether your organisation is ready to make it stick.
A free webinar to score your readiness before you spend a penny
That is exactly what our free live webinar, From AI curious to AI ready, is built to answer. It is aimed at senior leaders and HR and L&D leaders responsible for AI strategy, and it runs on Wednesday 14 October 2026, 12:30 to 13:30, live on Microsoft Teams.
The session explores:
- A framework for scoring your organisation’s AI readiness
- The difference between a genuine skills gap and a fear driven request
- Four dimensions that shape readiness
- A live demonstration of AI applied to real business data
- A clear route from assessment to embedding AI at scale
- What “AI ready” actually looks like for your organisation
By the end, you will have a clear score for your organisation across four AI readiness dimensions, a framework for identifying which dimension is holding you back, insight into how you compare to others in the room anonymously, the confidence to brief your leadership team on what AI adoption actually needs, and a practical four step route for what to do next. You will also receive a self-assessment pack by email the same day.
Led by the people who do this work every day
The session is led by Richard Traynor and Thomas Mitchell, coaches for our AI and Data apprenticeship programmes. Richard’s background spans digital transformation, product ownership and building his own software business, and his focus is the practical end of AI, what people actually use, what they quietly avoid, and what makes the difference between a licence rollout and a habit. Thomas is a trainer and doctoral researcher in educational technology and a certified neurodiversity specialist, and his coaching covers everything from everyday AI use at Level 3 to applying AI and data to business problems at Level 4.
And we will be honest with you. Most organisations jump straight to buying training, which is why so much of it lands flat. If your score says start elsewhere, we will say so.
