There’s a free tool that will tell you exactly where your HR skills gaps are, and most people considering a qualification have never used it.
If you’ve looked into CIPD qualifications, you’ll have seen the Profession Map mentioned everywhere. It sounds like industry jargon, but it’s worth understanding, because it’s the reason CIPD qualifications work the way they do, and you can use it right now, whether or not you ever enrol on a course.
What it is, in plain English
The Profession Map is a framework that defines what good looks like in the people profession. It was developed with input from thousands of HR professionals and sets out the knowledge, skills, and behaviours needed at different career stages.
Why does that matter? Because it means CIPD qualifications aren’t based on what academics think HR should be. They’re based on what practitioners actually need to know to be effective in their roles. When you study a CIPD qualification, everything in the curriculum traces back to that framework.
How to use it before you spend a penny
You don’t need to be enrolled on anything to benefit from the Map. CIPD offers a free lite version of its self-assessment tool that lets anyone benchmark themselves against the framework, which makes it a practical starting point in two situations. You can explore the Map and the self-assessment tool at CIPD’s site.
If you’re managing your own career, the self-assessment shows you where your strengths sit and where the gaps are, which takes the guesswork out of choosing between Level 3 and Level 5. If you’re leading a team, you can use the Map to identify development gaps across the whole function, even if you’re not planning to enrol anyone right now. It turns a vague sense that the team needs development into a specific picture of what kind.
Why it makes the qualification practical
Because the qualifications are built on the Map, and because every CIPD assessment is work-based rather than exam-based, what you study connects directly to what you do. You apply the learning to real challenges in your own organisation as you go, rather than memorising theory for an exam and forgetting it afterwards.
That link between framework and practice shows in the outcomes. 98% of our learners say they feel more confident in their role, and 75% are promoted or take on greater responsibility after completing their qualification.
A sensible first step
Try the self-assessment, look honestly at where the gaps are, and then decide whether a qualification is the right way to close them. If you’d like a second opinion on what your results suggest about the right level, drop us a message, no pressure.
Have you used the self-assessment? We’d be genuinely interested to hear whether the results matched how you saw yourself.
